RADICAL OPEN SCRABBLE TOURNEY A BIG SUCCESS
by Cathy Casey, NZASP President (and currently lurking between C and D grade)

Congratulations to organiser Cicely Bruce and the Whangarei Scrabble Club for hosting the first (and longest) Open Scrabble tournament in New Zealand under competition rules. Twenty five Scrabblers from all over the country played 30 games against each other over three days. Many thanks to Murray Landon who had to tweak his scrabble scoring programme (Elixs) to cope with 25 players at one grade level.

The Giant Round Robin tournament was a roaring success with very high quality Scrabble, which led to a tight finish between Chris Tallman and Lawson Sue to decide the winner (Chris won on spread). It was also hugely successful for building new friendships among the 25 contestants. Players from lower grades (like myself) got to play with Scrabblers that we would never normally have the chance to play, including Grand Masters like Lawson Sue, Liz Fagerlund, Cicely Bruce and Anderina McLean. Many people remarked that the mix really helped to improve camaraderie and social bonding between players across all grades. All in all, the Open tourney was a lovely way to get to know people better and I think we are a closer-knit Scrabble family as a result. It was an amazing educational opportunity for players from lower grades too.  I learned lots from playing against higher grade Scrabblers.  I found out that just like we bottom dwellers, higher grade players can: (i) Play phoney words  (ii) Make mistakes and (iii) Get beaten! Our friendly post-mortems at the end of each game allowed us a glimpse of others’ successful (and unsuccessful) strategies.

I wasn’t among the winners and didn’t quite meet my expectancy, but I absolutely loved every game including the textbook thrashing I received from Lorraine Van Veen (which gave her 497 points and a spread of 223 points). Lorraine got three bingos: CORNIEST (68), GELATING (75) and TRIPODS (65). One of the highlights of the tournament for me was making both Chris Tallman (the eventual winner) and Lawson Sue (the close second) sweat blood to scrape their wins over me.  Both games went to the wire. Such fun. Another highlight was playing against New Zealand’s only blind Scrabble player Olivia En.  It was awe inspiring to watch Olivia play using her fingertips on specialised braille equipment. She is one of the top players in the country and she finished 9th in the Round Robin. (I also remember it for being one of my 11 wins!) So all in all, the Open tourney was hugely successful and enjoyed by all players. Thank you to all the entrants, especially those in lower grades who were initially nervous. Playing 30 games over three days is a hard slog and everyone who competed should be well proud of themselves. Let’s have more tournaments with just one grade. Who’s next?
PS – A huge shout out to the Whangarei Scrabble Club Committee for providing the delicious buffet lunches.

The Spinoff documentary of the National Scrabble Championship 2023 was released 07.11.2023 and is now available to watch – go to the media page for the link!

In “Every Word Counts”, meet Scrabble players from around the country as they hone their skills ahead of the National Championship. If you’ve ever known the thrill of landing a triple word score or the magic of shuffling your tiles into a seven letter bonus word, a new documentary on The Spinoff is for you. “Every Word Counts” goes inside the world of competitive Scrabble following three passionate players on their journey to the National Scrabble Championships, you’ll have front row seats to the highs and lows of this fiercely competitive game – and see what it takes to come out on top. Thanks goes out to Alexander Gandar and his Spinoff crew for this poignant portrayal of the three featured competitors.

Auckland Scrabble player Lyres Freeth has become New Zealand’s 43rd Scrabble Champion. After a thrilling weekend Lyres won 18 of her 22 games to fend off a strong field of experienced international players and grand masters from NZ and overseas. Her win was all the more exciting because Lyres returned to the championship after nearly two years off from competitive Scrabble after having a baby.
It is her first national win. After the weekend, Lyres is now ranked 3rd in the New Zealand rankings. Her husband Dr Alastair Richards is ranked number one in NZ and is the current world champion.

Lyres Freeth – NZ Champion 2023, Lawson Sue – B Grade, Laura Griffiths – C Grade, Karen Miller – D Grade, Suzanne Harding – E Grade, Gil Quiballo – High Game Trophy (595 points), Laura Griffiths – Georgie Trophy (149 rating points), Lyn Wood – Eileen McLean Trophy (245 tournament games played in the last year)

Another exciting win at the national champs was a stunning performance by Christchurch Scrabble Club player Laura Griffiths in C grade. Laura was playing in her first ever national championships and won 16 of her 22 games. Laura also won the Georgie Trophy for the most improved player. After the weekend she has moved up 17 places from 62nd in the NZ rankings to 45th. The tournament attracted 68 players from all parts of New Zealand and of all ages and occupations. Whangarei Scrabble Club took out the team prize.

Presentations were made to the prizewinners by our new prez Cathy Casey!
Cathy, who was elected at the AGM held during the weekend, now hails from the Whangarei club, along with treasurer Cicely Bruce and webmaster Suzanne Liddall. Stan Gregec from Tauranga has joined the exec as the new veep, and we have gladly retained Liz Fagerlund from Auckland as secretary of the association. Liz managed the 3-day tournament like the professional that she is, and a fabulous time was had by all. The lovely Val Mills, our dedicated Forwords Editor, was presented a Life Membership award from outgoing President Howard Warner. Val and her Forwords team – Jeff, Jennifer, Lyres, Anderina and Glennis celebrating the next issue in Spring will be the 150th.

Milestone badges for tournament games played were also presented to the recipients below – Jennifer Smith 3000, Anderina McLean 2000, Frances Higham 100 and Judy Driscoll 1000.

Congratulations to Andrew Bradley for winning the 2023 Masters!
Andrew had an impressive 21.5 wins so essentially nailed it! NZASP VP Cathy Casey presents Andrew with the Masters Shield and Dylan Early in 2nd place with the runner-up trophy. Howard Warner was in 3rd place, and Val Mills in 4th place. Congratulations everyone!

The 2023 Masters is being held during Easter weekend and hosted by the Whangarei Scrabble Club for the first time. We can now all follow the results when they start going live on Saturday 8th April, after which they will be updated after each game until play ends on Monday 10th. Many thanks go out to John Baird and Murray Landon for their work in setting up this online system.

Big congratulations to New Zealand scrabble’s new Grand Master – Gil Quiballo. Gil achieved the title this year, having three top 10 ranking finishes in the last 12 months. In January 2022 after the Wellington tournament he had a post tournament ranking of 10th, followed by the Masters in April with a ranking of 8th, and the third was after the Wellington tournament in October where he once again finished 10th on the rankings. A remarkable achievement considering the only other tournament Gil played in 2022 was the Nationals in Christchurch. Gil had a long break from scrabble, and we are delighted to welcome him back on the scrabble scene. Well done Gil.

Congratulations to our Prez Howard Warner who won the 2022 World Senior Champs in Sydney, being presented by Bob Jackman – with Joanne Craig in 2nd and Cicely Bruce who came 4th. Howard also won the Best Kiwi award for the 2022 Trans-Tasman Challenge. Many thanks to Karen Richards and team for organizing these fabulous events!

Grab your sword and net for the 2021 Gladiators WESPA Championship. This online event, being hosted on the Woogles.io platform, replaces the face-to-face biennial WESPA Championship. It’ll be held over the last two weekends of November and first weekend of December.

Some very sad news from the Whanganui Club: Vale Awhina Taikato.
Awhina passed away on Monday after a courageous struggle with cancer. Her tangi is underway this afternoon at her home, 4 Armstrong Place, Whanganui. She was passionate about her Scrabble and loved attending club and as many tournaments as she possibly could. She was prolific on Scrabble Go too, often making moves in the wee small hours. Awhina was always very upbeat even over the last few months of her illness. Always a smile. Always respectful. Rest in peace, Awhina

New Zealand face-to-face tournaments are back on. In mid-September, Wellington held a one-day Swiss event, the first rated tournament anywhere since our latest nationwide COVID lockdown. In October over Labour Weekend, it’ll be Whanganui’s. And Mt Albert has is aiming for the first weekend in November. See the Tournaments calendar.

Due to their respective Delta outbreaks, New Zealand and Australia have agreed to cancel the 2020 Trans-Tasman Challenge, which was to have been held in Canberra in November 2021.

The ‘Royal Scrabble Day’, held in the Royal Hotel in Featherston, is the first chance for many tyros from the new Masterton Club to experience tournament-style play, alongside a sprinkling of Wellington ‘veterans’.

The National Championship in Hamilton attracts more than 80 players. Several players receive their milestone badges, including Lynn Wood – for reaching an amazing 5000 tournament games.

Lynn Wood is honoured for her valued past service as distributor of Forwords magazine.

Gladiators WESPA Champs

The 2021 Gladiators WESPA Championship is an online event being hosted on the Woogles.io platform. An individual rather than team event, it replaces the face-to-face WESPA Championship, last held in Goa, India in 2019.

The group stages of Gladiators will run on 20–21 November and 27–28 November. The knockout rounds – quarters, semis and final – will be held on 4–5 December.

A team from Pakistan will be hosting, directing and providing technical expertise for the tournament. In a new development for online competition, the tournament organisers, together with WESPA, have developed sophisticated anti-cheating protocols.

Under national quotas just released, New Zealand gets four places. All quotas are halved from last year’s trial Virtual World Scrabble Championship. Several countries have been invited to enter for the first time, including Barbados, Gabon, Malawi, Mauritius, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Switzerland and Vietnam.

The NZASP has contacted the top-ranked New Zealand players.

14.04.2021:  Overseas Scrabble competition is back. Yippee!

We can now announce the dates of the Trans-Tasman Challenge 2021 (formerly 2020). It’ll be held in Canberra, 19–21 November. That’ll be two whole years (!) since Kiwis were last involved in a face-to-face international.

New Zealand has 10 places to Australia’s 16. Our selection will be based on the top 10 ranked players immediately after the Kiwi tournament, 7–8 August.

For those who don’t make the cut but are still keen to play an international tourney, the WESPA-rated, open ACT Champs will be held the same weekend, in the same venue. Kiwis would be very welcome.

More details about both events to come. But for those feeling starved of top-level play or starting to plan their summer holiday, it’s worth adding these dates to your calendar.

Howard Warner

January 2021: The NZASP wish to congratulate Stanley Ngundi GM on achieving the status of Grand Master in 2020. This title is gained by attaining 5 separate post-tournament rankings in the top 10 over a 5 year period or 3 separate post-tournament rankings in the top 10 in the last 12 months. Stanley’s achievement of gaining the title in such a short time is most impressive.

December 2020: Lynn Wood was presented with a book voucher by Liz Fagerlund, for her valued service as past distributor of Forwords magazine, at the ‘Nearly Christmas’ Tournament, organized by Alastair Richards and Lyres Freeth at Murrays Bay.

A tribute to the late Simon Holdsworth.  25 June 1949 – 14 November 2020.
Simon was the patron of the Mt Albert Scrabble Club in the 80s and 90s. For many years, Thos Holdsworth and Sons (now Holdson) supported the club in many ways. Prizes of puzzles and games were provided generously every year. Tiles and Scrabble sets were made available. For this the club will be forever grateful.
Roy Vannini remembers these occasions well….. “always a smile and best wishes from him in all our dealings.” John Foster recalls a meeting with him to discuss sponsorship for the 3rd World Champs in 1995. After fully sponsoring the travel and accommodation for the first two World Championships this unfortunately came to an end with Mattel NZ taking over.

Jeff Grant recalls a lasting memory.

“During the first World Scrabble Champs in London in September 1991 the New Zealand and Aussie teams went out for dinner one evening at an exclusive restaurant featuring some very exotic dishes. We were joined by Simon Holdsworth and his wife, and everyone enjoyed a most entertaining meal and more than a few drinks. The prices weren’t cheap though and some of us were wondering how much we would have to fork out. At the end of the night, Simon picked up the tab and paid the lot – over 500 pounds! It may have been ‘business expenses’, but still a very generous act and certainly my most enduring memory of Simon Holdsworth.”

Lynne Butler recalled that night. She said she’ll never forget her amazing salmon meal, quite something. The first and only time she had the pleasure of meeting Simon.

Providing the NZ Masters trophy, ‘The Holdsworth Shield’, was another one of his fine gestures, along with the usual stack of games and puzzles for both the Masters and the National tournaments every year. There will be many Scrabblers out there with a Holdsworth and Sons jigsaw puzzle or game in their homes as a result.

I, personally, have memories of meeting him round the company Board table while President of both the Mt Albert club and the NZASP. A more professional and amenable person I have never met. Always so accommodating and helpful. A true gentleman. Our thoughts go out to his family and all those involved with Holdson’s as I know how much they respect and adore this man.

R.I.P Simon.

02.11.2020: The Association received an email from Chris Lipe, Chairman of WESPA …
“It is with sadness that we must announce the cancellation of WESPAC 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In normal circumstances, preparations for the WESPAC, to be held in a year’s time, would be well underway. Dates would be announced, venues and lodging would be arranged, and the qualification schemes for every member organization would be in full swing. Early entrants would be sending in their fees and booking their flights. In this difficult year, however, we have been unable to begin even initial planning. International travel will be highly uncertain for the foreseeable future and major populations of players in America and Europe are looking at dire rates of new covid cases and new lockdowns. Even if planning could occur on a contingency basis, domestic tournament play will be slow to resume in much of the world in 2021, making a fair qualification scheme for WESPAC impossible for member nations to implement. We look forward to Michael Tang’s Alchemist Cup, scheduled for late 2022, and will move forward with the process to plan WESPAC 2023 when the time is appropriate. WESPA Member Nations should also note that the 2021 WESPA BGM will take place virtually in late 2021. Details about nominations for WESPA positions and attendance via Zoom will be sent out in the second half of 2021.”

Thanks to Sue McRae, the Masterton Scrabble club will now launch on Wednesday, October 28, from 2-5pm, at the Masterton District Library, 54 Queen St, Masterton.

Contact Sue on 027 4490 601 or sue.mcrae.nz@gmail.com if you would like to join, and read her story in the Wairarapa Times-Age: https://times-age.co.nz/third-time-lucky-for-club/

20 September 2020: Clare Wall was presented with a beautiful potted orchid, in recognition of her hard work after her retirement as dedicated Webmaster and Executive member, at the recent Wellington tournament. Clare is still joining up members with Slack, so contact her on our Slack page for more info. Learn how to use Slack here

26.08.2020: Hastings Scrabble Club has now closed it’s doors.

24.08.2020: Message from Howard Warner, President.

WESPA has met with all member countries (including New Zealand) to discuss Hasbro/NASPA’s proposal for purging their dictionary of “offensive” words. All countries, as well as the WESPA dictionary committee, have voted overwhelming against expurgation in our dictionary/word list. This view will be put to Mattel/Collins. In the meantime, our word list remains untouched.

13.08.2020 (5-8pm): The new Masterton Club will be launched at the Masterton District Library’s new Learning Centre. Former Wellington player Sue McRae is organizing the new club, and we wish her all the best with the launch!

The Milestone Badges Awards were initiated by our President, Howard Warner, and were recently awarded at the Whangarei Scrabble Club, preceding their tournament on 04 July 2020.

John Foster, Rosemary Cleary and Lyres Freeth weren’t present, so we would like to extend our congratulations to them, and they will receive their badges at their next tournament.

MILESTONES:

4000 games – Lynn Wood (4801 games)

3000 games – Betty Eriksen (3602)  Val Mills (3222)  Howard Warner (3189)  John Foster (3151)

Glennis Hale (3072)  David Gunn (3068)

2000 games – Rosemary Cleary (2027)  Annette Coombes (2021)

1000 games – Lyres Freeth (1017)

Betty Eriksen also received the Eileen McLean trophy for the person who has played the most number of tournament games in NZ from the first tournament post Nationals, up to and including, the following Nationals. There were no Nationals this year, so up to the last tourney that was prior to that). It was very close this year with Betty pipping her rivals at 171 games. Congratulations again to all!

We received this message on 30.06.2020 from Michael Tang , the organizer of the Alchemist Cup – “Due to many uncertainties caused by COVID-19 pandemic, I am sorry to inform that Alchemist Cup 2020, which is supposed to be held from 2nd to 6th December 2020, will now be cancelled. Please stay Safe and Healthy.” A disappointing outcome, but a safe decision.

We are pleased to announce that Dylan Early has accepted an offer to join WESPA’s Dictionary Committee. His breadth of experience and dedication will be invaluable. Congratulations, Dylan. The other Kiwi to serve on a WESPA committee is Liz Fagerlund (Rules).

The Collins Coalition are going to direct a Virtual Scrabble World Cup! For this tournament, teams of 5 players from 16 countries will compete in a bracket format. Keep up with their blog post for more information, and on the Virtual Tournaments web page. Registration closes very soon on July 5th. For players whose WESPA rating is not high enough to qualify as one of the top 5 players in their country, they are considering directing a companion CURE tournament in the next couple months if time is on their side. Until then, happy Scrabbling!

THE NZASP NATIONALS that were to be held traditionally on Queen’s Birthday Weekend in June 2020 were CANCELLED due to Covid 19 lockdown requirements and will be rescheduled for same time in 2021. The good news is that we are back to Level 1 as from midnight on 08 June 2020 and NZ clubs can resume hosting their tournaments with no restrictions! Please contact your club secretary, or the NZASP secretary, Liz Fagerlund, for more info …  EMAIL
